This is a completely different software from the old site. There is no option to delete notifications. Facebook is the same way. No way to delete notification their either. Don't worry, it doesn't hurt anything to have them there.

If you want to mark them as "read", you can do that from the notifications page, or the drop-down from the notifications icon.
